After successful completion of the program, they are assigned a beat and operate independently. Lateral officers' status remains probationary for the first 12 months of employment. Permanent status is achieved upon successful completion of probation.

Additionally, California POST Basic officers' status is probationary for the first 18 months of employment. Once probation is successfully completed, a California POST Basic certificate can be acquired, and permanent status is achieved.
